why libraries matter

Broken Madonna among New Books, Hove Library
Broken Madonna among New Books, Hove Library

I grew up in a household without books, my parents came from Italy and were barely literate. Growing up, I discovered worlds that excited me, gave me new horizons via my local library.

Now that girl has her book, Broken Madonna, sitting among the new books at her local library in Hove.

It gives me goosebumps to see this, and an enormous amount of pride. For me, this photo speaks volumes about the role that libraries can play in shaping lives, providing inspiration, and on a cold winter's day, a place to sit, for free, in the warm to read a paper or magazine, use a computer, study and more.

I’ve always been a big library user, it’s been an important part of my childrens’ lives too. We need to value and support these services when they are under pressure.
